This round's AO3 Collection | Tagset | Nomination guidelines | Requests App | Mod email: seasonsofdrabbles@gmail.com

Need to contact us or have a question? See the Mod Contact post!

New rule as of March 2026: Crossovers do not count towards the minimum of 3 fandoms per sign-up if they contain a fandom you're already requesting/offering. For instance, if you're requesting Fandom A and Fandom B, a Fandom A/Fandom C crossover would not count towards the minimum of 3. At the end of the round, we'll assess this new rule/ask for your feedback and decide whether to keep/tweak/toss it.

The full Guidelines are below and we strongly encourage you to read them! Here are some quick notes, though:
  • First time doing a fic exchange? Welcome! Fanlore has some helpful explanations about how AO3 exchanges work and general exchange etiquette. Don't be afraid to ask a question if something's confusing.
  • Here, "drabble" does not just mean a short fic, but a specific wordcount. In addition to single drabbles (fics of exactly 100 words), we accept double drabbles (200 words) and triple drabbles (300 words). We also accept drabble series/sequences.
  • When you sign up, you cannot exclude single drabbles from your offers or requests. You are still welcome to request or offer the other drabble types, you just can't leave 100-word drabbles out entirely from your signup. See below for more details about this recent rule change.
  • Participants must be 18+.
  • Don't use generative AI for your gifts.

:: Jules gets a moment in private with Jaliya. Their conversation sparks an idea. Part of the “Lodestar” arc, set in the Polychrome Heroics universe. ::

“You mean that some of the cats or kittens got inside, then back out again?” Jules’ voice rose in pitch, even as he let his head tap against the wall behind him.

“Nobody’s sure. Nobody’s seen enough of what’s going on at any one moment,” Jaliya admitted. “I know that they’re probably mostly like ordinary cats, but I… I want to protect them. They’re special.”

The lost art of noticing

yeahjukes: A profile view of myself peering towards the viewer. (Default)

A generous $20 tip from work earlier today (at a performance job that doesn't typically yield them) led me to the local taqueria. It's a convenient 5-minute walk from my apartment. I proudly wear my PJs to local haunts and did no differently today. Partway there--my pockets stuffed with my wallet, phone, keys, and airpods--I realized I wasn't going to end up needing half my things.

Dependence on technology is an insidious thing. It slithers over and into us, controlling us without us even knowing. Through all tech's benefits, it's critical to keep those downsides in mind. I can't say I would have pondered them so thoroughly tonight had I not already born a headache.

I decided not to use my phone the entire outing. I already had a headache, and I really wouldn't need it regardless. It's not like anything urgent was hovering over me; at least, not at that exact moment. But we are so deeply linked to our devices that the act of pulling out a phone is an unquestionable instinct. That is: you don't question your instinct. Instincts are designed to allow you to thrive in the world you have built. But is that the only world there is?

It's kind of incredible just how much there is to see when you actively stop to notice things. Sat at the outdoor tables with my food, I ate slowly. I loosely dropped in on nearby conversations and wondered at how separate my life is from theirs, that their talk concerns people I will never know. I noticed the way the trees in the parking lot lined up with one another. I noticed the clover-looking leaf that hung beneath the brush in the nearby pot. I noticed all the people walking to and from their cars and how they engaged with one another; how they paid their unrelated peers no mind. I noticed how strangely self-aware I inversely became just by noticing these things, and I noticed the backwards kind of comfort I found within that sort of terrifying feeling.

At least once a week I am struck by the reality of this universe we live in. That we live on a giant rock spinning through space, and my day-to-day concerns are centered on whatever the made-up concept of "Illinois" is. We live within such small and simple regards to a universe that extends wider than our minds are equipped to handle. That said, we really do contain multitudes, if we are able to notice those things at all.

I understand the same as anyone that it often feels impossible to put down the phone. It's a tool designed to make our world more bearable, condensing our experience of it into something algorithmically sifted and easier to sit within. But the longer we live this way, the harder it becomes to fight our instincts: the ones we know are detrimental, but "cannot help."

Not everything you notice will make you uncomfortable. Some of it will. But isn't that discomfort what makes existence interesting? It's our gift to notice, to think, and to feel. Why waste it?

(For what it's worth, I did pull out my phone, once: to update my team on what I'd accomplished that day. It could have waited until later, but the threat of losing one's current thought to the aether is real enough to inspire a reasonable break of metaphorical immersion.)

Recent Reading: Glorious Exploits

Hello friends ヾ(•ω•`)o I feel like it's been a while! Today I finished Glorious Exploits by Irish author Ferdia Lennon. It turned out to be the perfect book to read after finishing my lectures on the Greek and Persian wars, because it takes place in Syracuse during the Peloponnesian War (I caught that reference to the Athenian silver mines!)

The book is written in a contemporary Irish dialect, which put a lot of reviewers off. However, I think it works well for making the language accessible and readable to a modern audience in the sense that reading it, we can immediately tell who is likely educated, who is not, who is being casual, who is being disingenuous, etc. As long as you're prepared for it, I don't think it causes much disruption.

The audiobook is narrated by the author himself, which was fun. It's always great to hear an author's own take on their work. For instance, the way Lampo says "good morning," both to the Spartan guards and the Athenian prisoners of war at the start of the book. This could have been a nothing exchange, but the obnoxious way Lennon says that "good morning" tells us almost right away that Lampo is a guy who delights in being a thorn in others' sides and a guy who thinks he's hilarious

The plot of the story is simple: Gelon, Lampo's childhood best friend, decides they're going to put on a Euripides play with the Athenian prisoners, because the Athenians are the only ones who know enough of the script to pull it off.

That's all. The story moves at a leisurely pace, with Lampo and Gelon working through various technical snags in this plan and trying to garner support in Syracuse for the idea (there's not much).

I think Lennon excels at showing characters who are sometimes disappointingly realistic. Gelon and Lampo are not heroes. They are not conscientious objectors to the war. They are not activists against the obvious abuse the Athenian prisoners of war are going through. They're just two poor dudes put out of work by the war, who sort of maybe kind of thing it's not the greatest thing in the world for the Athenians to be tortured or starved to death and possibly someone might want to do something about that, at some point.

Similarly, the Athenians were undoubtedly the aggressors in the war. They invaded Sicily, they burned other villages on the island to the ground, they fully intended to conquer Syracuse. They allegedly killed Syracusans who had already surrendered. But the book asks, when is enough enough? When have they been punished enough? When have the Syracusans gone from victims seeking justice to perpetrators seeking vengeance?

Lampo himself, the main protagonist, is a prime mixed bag. His humorous nature makes him come off a bit harmless, but he can be wildly insensitive, even mean, even to people he likes. He can swing rapidly from mood to mood. He's often focused on himself and his insecurities can make him lash out or give up too easily. And yet, it's Lampo, not Gelon, who has the first confrontation with Bitton, a man who roams the quarries beating Athenian prisoners of war to death at random to soothe his grief for his son who died in the war. It's Lampo who inserts himself between Bitton and some Athenian strangers to try to talk the man down. And it's Lampo who urges action at the secondary climax, Lampo who sets that entire plot point in motion when no one else in Syracuse seems to give a shit.

In a way that feels characteristic of Irish tales, Glorious Exploits does not shy away from the gross, unglamorous reality of its story and its characters. It doesn't try to dress anyone up in shining armor or sacrifice the dull reality for a romantic sheen. Yet in the muck and the mire, a shocking gleam of poetry emerges. The play starts off as a lark for Lampo, a silly, ridiculous thing he's doing to humor his melancholy friend, but gradually, it becomes important. And as it becomes important to him, it becomes important to the reader. The plot is slow, and a reader may find themselves wondering why they're bothering with all this--but for me, the later two climaxes of the book hit like gut punches.

I'm still chewing this one over, but I enjoyed it and I would read more from this author. It's not a story that will shock and wow you upfront, but the heart of it really hits if you stick with it.

Used my manga TBR boardgame.

I finished 17/12 on my last board. I didn't realize one of them was part of a series so I ended up reading them all....... I had a great time with some of what I read!! Even the stuff that wasn't as good were good for something.

I need to pay more attention to if something is a series in the future along with double-checking if I really want to read something.

Welcome back to COMBO BREAKER everyone! The ever lovely Yorigami sisters have returned to count your combos.

How high has your combo managed to go? Joon is a brawler and and Shion is never far behind her in a fight (literally)! Joon is all ears for any new moves you might want to show her, especially ones where she can reap the benefits--because the two of them are misfortune goddesses and spending too much time around Shion might make your luck run out and end your sweet combo.
Rules
- Every week you will be able to pick a button, similar to how Pick a Color works. Every button can be either HIT or MISS.

- The number of HITs in a row you accumulate is the length of your combo but the moment you get a MISS, you lose all of it. This means if you accumulate 3 hits, then receive a miss, you CANNOT turn in those 3 hits. If you receive 2 hits, a miss, then a hit, You now only have one hit in your combo, not 3 not 2.
- You don't have to play every week to build up your combo! Time that passes between your HITs doesn't matter as long as you don't get a MISS. Feel free to skip a round or two if you decide that it's too high risk or you just don't have time to play!

- You are able to turn in your combos for prizes. Longer combos yield much bigger prizes but you have a greater chance of being interrupted so it's up to you if you'd rather take the risk or play it safe.

- When turning in your combo, please provide links to all HITs that are part of it. Also, once you turn in a combo, you can't reuse these HITs for your next combo.

- Please redeem your combos in the COMBO REDEEMING TOP LEVEL. There will be one posted with every round of this game, and it will always be the first comment on the post.

In This Round
7 buttons are hiding a HIT!

3 buttons are hiding a MISS!
